MANDALAY IS THE CAPITAL OF UPPER BURMA. IT IS A COMPARATIVELY MODERN TOWN, HAVING BEEN BUILT IN 1857 BY THE LAST KING OF BURMA BUT ONE. HIS SUCCESSOR KING THEBAW, GOVERNED HIS COUNTRY BADLY, AND PUT AFFRONTS UPON THE BRITISH. IN CONSEQUENCE AN EXPEDITION WAS SENT AGAINST HIM.//THUS THE FORT IN THE PICTURE OBTAINED ITS NAME
